Long term user on 2nd machine now...

Used these for 16 years or so.... First died after about 7 - 8 years mostly because I did not bother with decalc. But got through 2 services prior. Second is still going and never needed a service so far.Mostly only switch the machine off at night, but trying to change that bad power wasting habit! Heat up is only a few minutes.

worth every penny.

semi commercial coffee maker... makes restaurant quality coffee and is built VERY well. Eventually the boiler will go through normal use and there is a guy in the Midlands who services these for not-a-lot.... Ours gets used about 4 or 5 times a week and we have had it for a year and its makin superb coffee every time... RECOMMENDED !!

Makes good coffee but poor value long term

I went through a very detailed search of coffee forum discussions before I identified the Silvia as the best option for home use. First impressions are good - its is designed as a piece of industrial equipment and the sheet metal parts are screwed together. No sign of mass production moulded plastic parts. And it makes good coffee! Of course it benefits from being descaled regularly.After two years, the chrome plating started peeling from the brass group housing, which detracted from the machine's appearance. About a year later it stopped working spectacularly and tripped the circuit breaker in my kitchen. Two emails to the retailer asking for a repair cost went unanswered. Meanwhile, I bought a £30 Cookworks Espresso machine from Argos to use as a stop gap. It isn't as enjoyable to use and is pretty messy, but it makes a very decent espresso and the steam wand is up to the job of frothing milk for two cappuccinos at a time.Based on my experience, my recommendation would be to go for something like the Cookworks machine, a cheaper product with good user reviews - (the Cookworks' average was 4.5 stars on the Argos website. I would expect to replace it every couple of years but there is a big saving which can be spent on other, more useful stuff. Of course, the drawback of enthusiasts' forums is that a 'group think' prevails with participants reassuring each other that their expensive purchases were worthwhile.
