The GRAEF coffee grinder is a conical grinder made from stainless steel that handles coffee aroma with care. Poor value for money - Graef espresso set

Poor value for money overall. I bought it for £400 and used it for 6 months. Prompt delivery from Germany by the seller.Grinder:It is apparently the same grinder as a sunbeam/krups grinder sold in Australia/USA.The grinder has conical metal burrs 38mm. See some photos on coffee forums like home-barista.com. Considerably better than what is available on Amazon for under £100. The quality of grinding is too coarse for espresso rendering it pretty useless for its intended use as a companion of an espresso machine.Tentative to adjust the distance between the burrs to produce finer grind by additional washers (as recommended by manufacturer) proved to be relatively easy. Unfortunately the motor is too weak (150W) and gets stuck all the times for any finer settings as needed for espresso. As you try to grind finer, the upper part also moves resulting in an inconsistent particle size.After this disappointment and a lot more research bought a different grinder available on Amazon which can be found as Eureka - Italian brand. It is stronger at 250W, 50mm burr diameter and very precise in grinding extremely fine if required.Espresso machine:Pros:Good lookingSeems solidly builtSome degree of temperature control (PID built in) which should be a plusPressure gaugeThree way solenoid valveCons:Brewing water temperature is too low even on highest settingExpensive parts - not available directly in UKthe group head is not accepting commercial size portafilters/filtersthe portafilter is not locking firmly in place (under pressure it tends to rotate becoming a potential danger)some times it fails to prime the pump after it runs out of waterpoor milk frotherOwning and using several other espresso machines (Gaggia/Delonghi- manual; Jura S9-fully automatic) I can say that this one fails to deliver even if it certainly has some good engineering put into it.At this price point as the machine has a PID built in with 3 temperature settings (low/medium/high) and volumetric settings it should alone justify the price paid. But as the brewing water temperature is too low, somewhere around 77-79 degrees C, it is not hot enough it must be around 90. I checked it with several measurement devices including an external PID with sensors already calibrated. The same findings are on another forum. A way around to boost the temperature for brewing is to first steam the milk but that pretty much defies the whole PID benefit.I like- the solidly built case,- water tank with thick walls and metal finish including a clear area for water level,- water pipes folding for removing the water tank- electronic controls for coffee (single/double)- programmable volumes as well as manual- pressure gaugeBut unless there is a way to adjust the brewing temperature higher than the factory delivered it is going to be a waste of money.
