The Puccino is a sophisticated home espresso machine in a neat, narrow body perfectly at home in the modern kitchen. La Pavoni are one of Italy's most famous espresso machine manufacturers, in business since 1905. The high quality pump produces up to 15 bar pressure for exceptional espresso extraction. Use the steam wand to create dense micro foam for cappuccinos, or steamed milk for lattes and flat whites. The water tank is accessed from the side which makes it very practical beneath kitchen cupboards. One of the secrets to fantastic espresso is a consistent machine temperature during operation. The boiler and brew head of this machine are all fashioned from brass for excellent thermal stability. The chunky 57mm portafilter is made from chromed-brass for heat retention and durability. Your tiny ristretto is (not) frozen...

So, what do I know about coffee? Well, in the sixties it was Blue Mountain in a jug. In the seventies, a moka pot. Then, from the eighties on (having identified espresso as 'the one', chiefly from visits to Spain and Italy) a succession of home espresso machines, the last two being by Briel (maybe not the best, but certainly not the worst - though clearly not 'semi-professional' as the Puccino is billed). And there were many times when I even used to think "how can one possibly want more from a coffee hit than this?" on finishing my daily cup (a rare experience I have to say, outside of Italy and Spain, at 'professional' establishments).Then last year the second Briel died, and I spent a few (not unenjoyable) months using the Presso hand device I'd bought when the Briel started showing telltale signs, but (here the horror element in the story comes out) ***until then I'd been using a blade grinder all these years*** (a shameful confession), which was no good at all with the Presso. Ah well, Iberital to the rescue (following a hand-driven Porlex which didn't last long) and needless to say the MC2's initial setting of "Aegean 000" was too much for the Presso (parts are however easily available). So, using this as an excuse I decided to upgrade...I was going to buy a Rancilio Silvia (official entry-level geek machine), but then I got to reading about PID, and people saying "yes, but for $100 more you can get X or Y which are much better" and so on, and really all I want is that one (okay, maybe those two or three, now) perfect cup(s) of coffee so I can forget about the whole thing afterwards...... but unfortunately of course it doesn't work like that. The point is, with the Pavoni machine the aftertaste is so rich and full, and lasts so long (well over an hour, if you allow it to) that 'forgetting the whole thing' has become a distant memory (all helped by a blend derived from an article on the web, 55% Brazil, 35% Sumatra, 10% Ethiopian which does very nicely, though I still like monsooned Malabar which I may try adding sometime).The unit itself seems very solid. Some may not like the bottom half being made of plastic, but overall it's reassuringly heavy, and the ergonomics of the design can't be faulted. The water reservoir is easily visible/accessible, and the drip tray easily detached (unlike the Briel, where both these things were clanky). And, the pressure gauge - really useful for seeing exactly what's happening in the quantity/grind/tamp equation (though of course extraction time more-or-less tells the same story). Maybe the decor round the gauge and switches is a tad cute for my liking, but quite easily ignored esp. in low lighting. (NB be careful of the '13 15 14' switch ordering in the manual's diagram - although the switches themselves have logos which should alert all but the most impatient).Two points - some amount of searching on the web (and attempts to measure accurately the convex plastic tamper provided) suggest that the filter size is nominally 56mm. I got a Rattleware 57mm tamper from the US, and that seems perfect (flat too). The other thing - I haven't tried the steamer, as I prefer 'cafe con leche' the Spanish way (with pan-heated milk). It's a single boiler machine of course, but I've no reason to suppose the steam system doesn't work as well as the YouTube video demo (from Fairfax, my erstwhile local supplier) so vividly suggests. Also seems to work well (of course heating the cup with a pre-run) not too long after switch-on. BTW plenty of crema, every time.I do rather wish it had actually been called Puccini though (apparently an equivalent name). "Nessun dorma" seems such a perfect epithet (and probably the green light will never sleep either)...

Cheap feel. Too light. Leaked.

First of all, I bought this reduced from amazon marketplace. I returned it for a refund after I found that it leaked from the group head. The machine itself feels cheap, too light. The switch surrounds come loose and you have to twist them to tighten them back up. It has a small water reservoir but its easily filled and very visible. Unless you grind your own beans you have to find a coffee that the machine will work with. For instance I found lavaza rosso worked well but other lavaza did not. The drip tray is plastic which adds to the cheap feel. The frothing wand is awkward to use as theres not much room to get a jug under. If you get one that doesnt leak then it will work but there are much better and easier to use machines on the market for less money.
