This machine is exactly what I thought it would be . I did a lot of research before buying and it serves the purpose of an aspiring barista. Not cheap but you get what you pay for

At last...the perfect home espresso!

Having owned several semi-automatic espresso machines (Pavoni, 2 x Saeco) and a Gaggia Automatic bean-to-cup machine, over a period of almost 30 years, I was devastated when my last faithful Saeco Via Venezia finally expired.I considered replacing it with perhaps the Rancilio Sylvia , the Giotto or the German ECM, all of which have been enthusiastically reviewed.However, my wife has an aversion to the general issue finish of brushed stainless steel - feels it looks dull and is hard to keep free from smears and fingerprints. So, I researched the market for coloured or enamelled machines...and up came the Graef ES91.The machine read well and I got a German speaking friend to check out the reviews on-line in that country - all looked good.The machine looked great in the photos too and the tech. spec. appeared to be superb as were all the features. On the strength of that and a gut feeling that this would be a good buy, I soon found the best deal from a supplier in Germany at 500 inc postage to the UK...and ordered one!It arrived beautifully packed in 3 days and unpacked and sitting on our counter, looked stunning in bright white and chrome finishes.On setting up the ES91 I soon became aware of the manufacturing quality of the whole machine which is to an exceptionally high standard - and looks it!All you have to do is fill with water and switch on - no priming of pumps of course. The ES91 comes with 4 coffee holders - 1 & 2 cup standard and double-skinned (for great crema with commercially ground coffees).The first brew we tried with ground Lavazza red label was excellent for a first shot. We then tried the double-skinned holder and the crema could almost hold the spoon up! The flavour was deep, sweet and intense...amazing! For a cappuccino, the frother is fast - and quiet! Dense, light, creamy froth with Longlife milk, naturally.Now, it gets better. Having brewed the first shots manually, we tried the set time buttons - one single cup, one double cup. The double seemed a bit light on water for us, so we set it in seconds to give the amount we prefer - every time without having to watch it! Brilliant, and sooo easy to alter. We haven't seen any need to do so yet, but it is equally easy to change the water temp. for coffee brewing AND the steamer temperature - yes, really!In summary, the is machine is the perfect semi-automatic of the highest quality and with clever, useful features - not gimmicks that are useless. It works easily and looks stunning which together with a 2 year warranty and accessories such as a high quality tamper and s/s jug completes a superb package.

German quality? Erm ... NO

I bought a Graef ES81 espresso machine in November 2012, 6 months later loud popping noises were heard from inside the machine (like fireworks going off) and then a smoking smell came from the vents at the back - which was bad enough by itself but even more so when you consider the unit was plugged in BUT switched OFF. I contacted Graef in Germany, they never replied to a single email. I was then advised that warranty repairs are dealt with by EPE in Bradford, I called them and was told by a disinterested telephone operative to email details of the fault and she would refer it to the correct department. I emailed by return, no reply, I sent chaser emails, no reply. I complained again to Graef in Germany - no reply but a PA at EPE eventually emailed me, offered sincere apologies for my emails being ignored and promised to reprimand the service engineer. The unit was promptly collected, then guess what, the service engineer did nothing for weeks. I complained again and requested a refund based on my belief that the unit was a fire hazard. When the engineer eventually looked at the unit, it was agreed EPE would chase Graef for a refund and a reply was promised same day. Guess what, almost two weeks passed with no reply. I chased and was informed the service engineer would chase Germany today, guess what, no reply. Now been without the unit for almost two months. Here endeth the lesson ... do not buy Graef. Mercedes prices but NOT Mercedes quality.
