Product Description

The Mukka Express, made by Bialetti in Italy, is the first patented stove top cappuccino maker. It combines the traditional stove top style of espresso maker with a larger section for holding the milk. It brews coffee and froths milk at the same time making 2 cups of cappuccino or caffé latte.

The 2 Cappuccino Cup Maker produces the equivalent of 440ml/14.8 fl.oz (Note that the max. output refers to the cappuccino output including espresso, milk & froth).

The Cappuccno Maker is suitable for all hobs except induction.

It measures 20.3cm/8in high with a base diameter of 12.7cm/5in.

Cappuccino, but only just

Let's get straight to the point. This is an ingenious and well-made piece of design, but the results simply cannot compare with an espresso machine like a Baby Gaggia. It's fun to use and I certainly haven't had the difficulties of leakage that other reviewers have experienced. The instructions say you need to make three coffees before first use and I found it took five runs before I got a half decent froth. Now it works every time. It's easy to clean after each use and for me the secret was not to put too much milk into the top tank. If you fill to the suggested level the resulting coffee is far too milky for my taste so now I aim for 2 to 3mm below the line and I now get a good strong tasting coffee. The coffee holder requires two heaped teaspoons of quality ground espresso (I'm using Lavazza) and from this you get just the one large cup. So what is the downside? Well it isn't really a cappuccino as we know it. The milk froths well (I find semi-skimmed works best), but the bubbles are huge and the milk goes brown as obviously the coffee ends up in the same top tank. It does not have the same pure white and thick creamy consistency of a separately pressure steamed milk. Taste is good, but for a genuine cappuccino you need to look elsewhere. Having said that this is going to be the next best thing on my next camping trip. Producing something that is vaguely like a Cappuccino in a tent. Who would have thought it?

All the comments about needing gardening gloves to screw it together tightly enough and the coffee still leaking are familiar. It was infuriating because mine leaked - not always but sometimes - and I couldn't work out what was wrong. I was about to return it but then found that the rubber washer between the two halves was not properly seated; once that was fixed no more problems. I thought I had checked everything but clearly hadn't as it has never leaked since and I now only have to screw it together fairly firmly. The problems with lack of warmth and lack of foam are all caused by inadequate pressure caused by leaks. It is important that the gas ring is the right size and the valve assembly both clean and properly seated; occasionally if I haven't cleaned it properly the valve will open too early and the coffee is not heated/frothed enough. So only 4 stars because it isn't foolproof, but it makes very good cappucino and it's much simpler and doesn't take up the space of an electric one - all you have to do is put it on and forget about it; the valve popping and the milk frothing providing audible notice when it's ready.

Determination pays!

Like another reviewer on this site, I read dozens of reviews on this item on the American Amazon.com site and was cautioned, prepared, & made wary by finding not all the reviews were favourable.I'm no novice to stove-top espresso machines, nevertheless it took me 20 (twenty!) attempts to get it right, so be warned!That may be because I used cheap coarse-ground coffee for the first 3 'to be discarded' pots; perhaps the coarse stuff blocked something inadvertently? Whatever the problem, it was taking 12 minutes to 'froth production' instead of the 4 minutes quoted in the instruction booklet.Just before giving up & returning it to Amazon as a dud, I cleaned it very carefully (YET AGAIN), tried it (YET AGAIN), and four minutes later ..... heaven: it worked perfectly, giving one large mug of delicious cappuccino.While enjoying it I thanked providence that my other half doesn't drink coffee, though if she did, we'd need a machine each!I used the expensive but excellent Illy Espresso Caffe Macinato (ground roasted coffee) but for my regular twice daily fixes will investigate other brands also.ADDENDA: I've tried several different manufacturer's ground coffee, some taste better than others (subjectively) BUT VERY FINELY GROUND COFFEE SEEMS SOMEHOW TO BLOCK THE MACHINE & STOP IT WORKING. So I don't use the FINEST grind. This is where my first 20 attempts foundered - I was using very finely ground Illy; less finely ground (everyone's) works every time.
